The Bilinda Butchers – Careless Teens

ImageImageImageImageAww. This video for ‘Careless Teens’ by The Bilinda Butchers is really priddy and makes me yearn for a lazy sunny day where I can just do whatever I feel like. I discovered this band a couple of months ago when I first heard ‘The Lovers’ Suicide’, which also made me think of the weather. It was March and still snowing a lot in London, so it felt strangely appropriate to be listening to the lines: “Like a flower can’t bloom in the snow / We can’t hide, we can’t grow!”

Don’t you think that this video is almost like a lookbook for some kind of hipster fashion brand, like Wildfox or Cheap Monday, or something? When I saw it, I felt that it evoked a real girly ‘Tumblr’ aesthetic. Hopefully the maker of the video, Vanesa Capitaine, won’t be offended by that description – she does seem to use Tumblr a fair bit!

MGMT – All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

Ned Wenlock VideoFactory TownMGMT AnimationWow. This song appears to be over a year old, but I’ve only just heard it and it’s brilliant. I was looking for the original Bauhaus version when I discovered this one and – without wanting to sound disdainful towards MGMT – I was pretty surprised at what a good job they’d done of covering it. Don’t get me wrong, I really like MGMT, but they’re not exactly the kind of band that you listen to and then think: “Yeah, I can tell they’re big fans of Bauhaus.”

Better still, this exquisite video by Ned Wenlock really complements the track and conveys the song’s melancholy lyrics.

Still Corners – Berlin Lovers

Berlin LoversThis video for Still Corners’ new single ‘Berlin Lovers’ is lovely. It was directed by Christian Sorensen Hansen and reminds me a bit of Christiane F, but without the heroin. Imagine that Christiane F. and Detlev are a lot more innocent – just two regular teens who don’t inject smack into their veins, or give strangers handjobs for drug money – and this is pretty much it. Considering the song is called ‘Berlin Lovers’, perhaps the similarities aren’t even a coincidence. Either way, I like it.

Grumpy Cat in TIME Magazine

Grumpy Cat Time MagazineTardar SauceGrumpy Cat TimeTardar Sauce, known to most as ‘Grumpy Cat’, is in TIME Magazine. She’s been photographed by Elizabeth Renstrom doing her thing – looking simultaneously pissed off and cute as a button.

UMO – So Good At Being In Trouble

So Good At Being In TroubleGreat new song from Unknown Mortal Orchestra – sounds a bit like Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, but it’s also got that funk groove to it that kind of reminds me of Al Green or Marvin Gaye too. Watch the video – the McLovin guy from Superbad takes on a hippie cult and gets smacked over the head with a bottle! That’s pretty much it.

Cuties.

Schweppes Tennis Schweppes PartyAdorable work from ACW Grey in Tel Aviv. I’m always a bit of a sucker for any kind of inanimate object brought to life with a sweet little face (like BMO from ‘Adventure Time’). And it really is an excellent way to ease young children into drinking stylishly! Maybe if, when I was a child, someone had told me that gin & tonic goes together like milk and cookies, I would have put down the biscuit tin and entered my delinquency phase a lot sooner. That is one thing I miss about heavy drinking – I never had to worry about my weight!

MAN, You Suck…

MAN by Steve CuttsThis short animation by Steve Cutts shows how humans have been fucking up the world since the beginning of time. You’ll either find it shocking and saddening, or you’ll think it’s one of the best pieces of dark comedy you’ve seen in a while. I couldn’t help but laugh as this cartoon bastard goes on his awful killing spree. It reminded me of ‘Happy Tree Friends‘ – just the right mix of cute and vile.

2012 Highlights

It’s been a pretty big year for Shameless Self-Promotion. I guess you could say that this blog has now served its purpose, because I finally landed myself a paid job in advertising, which I really enjoy! However, I still really like blogging, so I’m not going to stop. Here are the posts that got the most hits this year – and from what I can tell, it would seem that people on the internet are still totally enamoured with cute stuff…

ABSOLUT UniqueAbsolut Unique bottlesThese psychedelic one-of-a-kind bottles by Absolut proved to be a hot topic. Definitely a successful idea from Absolut, which surely generated a lot of hype and a lot of sales.

Cute Advert AlertZingy EDFWhen EDF rolled out the first TV ad starring Zingy, everyone started going batshit crazy, wondering where they could buy some Zingy merchandise. Unfortunately, EDF didn’t bother manufacturing any Zingy toys, which is odd because there was so much demand for it. I’m fairly certain that if they had made some Zingy plush toys that were given to new EDF customers, a lot of people probably would have switched their energy provider. It sounds like a patronising move, but let’s face it, people want this shit.

And Dior Created WomanThe new Dior advert, starring the delightfully Bardot-esque Daphne Groeneveld had fashion fans asking, “Who’s that girl?!”

Tres Bien, Ray-Ban!Ray Ban Never Hide 1965Ray-Ban’s rebellious print ads got the kind of attention that they deserved.

Choupette Lagerfeld in V MagazineChoupette + KarlIt seems apt in the absurd, beautiful world of fashion that one of the newest icons is a cat – namely, Karl Lagerfeld’s feline friend, Choupette. Her shoot in V Magazine with Laetitia Casta caused a fair amount of interest because, on the internet, cute cats pretty much rule supreme.

Kim Kardashian obviously cottoned onto this, briefly becoming the owner of Mercy – a teacup Persian kitten. Sadly, Mercy is no longer around because Kim Kardashian is totally self-obsessed and has no soul she contracted a virus and died…poor little thing. But then, having said that, you know that she really has gone on to ‘a better place’.

Shangri-La: It’s In Our Nature

I’ve only just seen this ad campaign but thought I’d post it because of the wintry imagery and enchanting narrative – it feels kind of festive, plus I absolutely love wolves!

The video was directed by Bruno Aveillan, who was also behind the wonderful ‘L’Odyssée de Cartier’ ad from earlier in the year.
